Federal authorities confirm an active investigation as CMS faces multiple state inquiries

by Tony Mecia

In addition to probes from state officials, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are investigating Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

WBT radio reporter Brett Jensen reported Monday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina in Charlotte confirmed a federal investigation of the district.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI have had an active investigation related to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Because the investigation is ongoing, we cannot provide additional details at this time,” the statement said, according to WBT.

The federal investigation comes in addition to investigations by the State Bureau of Investigation, the state auditor’s office and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

The investigations come after the public release of documents in September that raised questions about whether CMS officials improperly committed or spent public money without required authorization or other financial safeguards.
