I have spoken with NCDOT's Brett Canipe on many occasions. He is straightforward, and does not play "bait and switch." The problem lies with City Council being inattentive to the legitimate concerns of the West side. We should all be furious at City Council and the negligence of Ed Driggs who has no regard for the negative impacts of Urban Renewal projects that have cut off neighborhoods in the downtown area from the rest of the city, e.g. 277 and Brooklyn Village. There are creative solutions can work here such as moving a portion of 77 underground near the downtown or capping 77 so that it is not a barrier to West side neighborhoods. Charlotte City Council needs to look at other similar cities such as Phoenix, AZ that capped its downtown interstates. Why is it necessary for Charlotte to always "reinvent the wheel?" This development is so disappointing but predictable.
