A ‘nomadic’ Charlotte arts organization has moved eight times in five years — by design

A temporary lease is something many tenants would prefer to avoid, but not Activation Studios. In fact, that’s exactly what it looks for in its real estate searches.

Activation, which describes itself as a “nomadic arts organization,” is — at least for now — at the former Plaza Presbyterian Church at The Plaza and Parkwood Avenue in the Plaza Hills neighborhood. It’s expected to be there until the end of July, then it will pack up and move somewhere else.

All told, the operation has moved about eight times in five years, according to Alvis.

“There’s tons of artists in Charlotte that do not have anywhere to perform their craft or are priced out of spaces,” said Matt Alvis, operations manager at Activation Studios, which offers discounted studio space for artists at its temporary homes. It can offer that because of the short-term nature of the agreements it’s signing for at its spaces.
