Tryon Medical’s growth plans

It’s been eight years since a group of doctors took the step of leaving Atrium Health’s Mecklenburg Medical Group to form their own independent practice called Tryon Medical Partners.

Today, Tryon is adding locations and is preparing for a new phase of expansion beyond its primary-care foundations to include sports medicine, skin-cancer surgery and more cardiologists.

Leading the push is Lindsay Muns, CEO of Tryon Management Group, the organization that manages Tryon Medical Partners’ operations. She joined Tryon about a year ago and says part of her mandate is to “supercharge” the company’s growth while maintaining the physician-led culture that sets it apart.

In a recent conversation on The Charlotte Ledger Podcast with The Ledger’s Tony Mecia, Muns explained the expansion beyond primary care, why healthcare is so complex and what is next for the growing medical practice.

Here’s a portion of the conversation, edited for length and clarity:

Q. As you look at the competitive landscape in Mecklenburg County, how does that landscape look?

The first thing I'll say is that it's growing. In a stagnant marketplace with two huge competitors in our backyard, the ability for us to grow would be much more difficult.

The fact that the greater Charlotte area continues to add people of all different ages from all different places gives us a huge opportunity to continue to grow and to continue to introduce people to really what Tryon is known for, which is the primary care base of knowing you as a patient, and therefore delivering better care than you can when you're a little bit more of a number.
