Sur La Table, the national cookware retailer and cooking class venue that has been a staple in Charlotte’s culinary retail scene since 2003, will close at SouthPark Mall on Jan. 25.

The closure is posted on the company’s website, and an employee who answered the phone on Saturday said items in the store are currently 20% off.

Sur La Table first opened in Charlotte in 2003 in a 5,500 s.f. space near Nordstrom. It expanded and added a cooking school when it relocated in 2014 to its current spot in the Dillard’s wing.

Over the years, the store hosted cookbook signings for celebrity chefs like Paula Deen and Emeril Lagasse and carried high-end kitchen equipment as well as tableware, fun cooking gadgets and cookbooks.

It became a go-to spot for foodies looking to up their cooking game, with local chefs leading classes ranging from fine French fare to summer baking camps for kids and teens.

Charlotte’s culinary landscape has grown mightily since Sur La Table entered the scene, with Johnson & Wales University opening a Charlotte campus in 2004 and cooking-class businesses like Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen and Sweet Spot Studio sprouting around the city.

Sur La Table opened a second location in Huntersville at the Northcross Commons Shopping Center in 2015, but that store closed after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and announced plans to close more than 50 stores.
