State regulators end enhanced scrutiny of Aldersgate’s finances

The N.C. Department of Insurance says it is no longer closely supervising the finances of Aldersgate, the east Charlotte retirement community that hit a financial rough patch in recent years.

In September, Aldersgate became a part of Asheville-based Givens Communities and is now known as “Givens Aldersgate.”

In an email to The Ledger last week, a Department of Insurance spokesman wrote: “The administrative supervision of Aldersgate has ended.” He added that the state continues to regulate Continuing Care Retirement Communities, or CCRCs, which offer independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care in one place.
