Email shows the law firm and consultant were planning CMS work together as early as December 2025

One of the mysteries in this saga — and there are a few of them — is how exactly consultant Raki McGregor got linked up with law firm Poyner Spruill, after Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools signed a contract with Poyner Spruill on Feb. 4.
Former Superintendent Crystal Hill said she didn’t know the law firm was hiring McGregor, with CMS picking up the $30,000-a-month tab. Neither did most school board members.
We still don’t know how that business relationship began, but now there’s a public record that shows the law firm and McGregor were planning to work together as early as December 2025, before the firm was hired.
