In just 45 days, one Charlottean organized a glizzy-themed bar crawl that drew an estimated 1,000 people and brought record sales to local businesses

If you spotted a pack of human-sized hot dogs roaming Charlotte on Saturday, no, your growling stomach wasn’t causing hallucinations. The Guy Fieri look-alike in hot dog stilettos and tights and the person who squeezed ketchup from bottle-shaped earrings onto a hot dog at Common Market in Plaza Midwood were also real.
Nobody could’ve predicted that Charlotte’s biggest small business success story this past weekend would've revolved around glizzies. But alas, in just 45 days, a whimsical idea dreamed up by a 28-year-old NoDa resident turned into a citywide bar crawl that packed local businesses, built community and left vendors selling out by midafternoon.
"I just look at a hot dog, and I just feel like it makes me smile," said organizer Olive, who moved to Charlotte a year-and-a-half ago. "The whole point was just to build community and just support local businesses."
How the idea got cooking
About two months ago, Olive (who declined to share her last name for privacy reasons) had a vision for a hot dog party – inspired by a hot dog keychain from Cracker Barrel that she always carries attached to her purse – and asked if local clothing store Glory Days Apparel would create hot dog merchandise to accompany the party. Glory Days told her that if she gathered 704 signatures, the store was in.
Olive got to work, canvassing the Rail Trail in South End and Common Market in Plaza Midwood in her hot dog costume. Among her Change.org petition signers, she found an unexpected enthusiasm for hot dogs.
