The ongoing question about when Discovery Place’s Charlotte Museum of Nature will finally open wasn’t answered at Mecklenburg’s Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.
But the reason why it isn’t open yet, despite finishing most construction this spring, was: The nonprofit will, in a few weeks, be considered in default on an agreement it has with Mecklenburg County, which requires it to pay the county $14.6M by Oct. 27.
Despite involving tens of millions of dollars of public money, commissioners at Tuesday’s meeting say they were caught off guard upon learning about the shortfall only days before.
Museum leadership this summer told county staff members it would not be able to pay that amount, which the agreement says is to be a lump-sum payment. Now, commissioners have to decide this month whether to declare Discovery Place in default of its agreement — which means the building, owned by the county, can be repurposed for some other use, such as a Park and Recreation center — or to cut a new deal with the museum.
Also, crucially: What will become of the otters?
