Mecklenburg park officials grapple with Morrison YMCA closure; Plus, more on what park commission discussed in this week's meeting

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is looking at how to fill an expected recreation gap in Ballantyne as the Morrison Family YMCA prepares to close and is considering an expansion at William R. Davie Park, the department shared Monday with the Park and Recreation Commission.
The YMCA, which announced in June that it will sell the Morrison Y to Moments of Hope Church, will close next summer.
Park and Recreation Director Nick Walker said the biggest impact of the YMCA’s closure would be the loss of its pool. The facility serves about 4,000 members in south Charlotte, according to figures cited during the meeting. The upcoming closure of the Y has drawn backlash, including protests, from south Charlotte residents.
