by Tony Mecia

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released a statement on Friday saying it welcomes a review announced last week by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the state Board of Education.

And it says it will continue cooperating with other probes underway by the State Bureau of Investigation and the state auditor’s office.

The statement said the district continues to be focused on its students. It’s the second-largest school system in North Carolina, with about 140,000 students.

Here’s the full statement:

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools appreciate that the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) is fulfilling its statutory responsibility to review the facts and information developed through the ongoing investigations involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. We welcome that review and will continue to cooperate fully with our state partners.

DPI’s review, although not a separate investigation from the work being conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation or the Office of the State Auditor, is essential to helping build public trust in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The department’s review of the facts, findings and information produced through those investigations is an important part of the department’s statutory responsibilities and efforts in maintaining confidence in public education.

As one CMS team, the Board of Education, district leadership, educators, school leaders and staff remain committed to providing the information, documentation and access necessary to support these processes. We will continue to engage openly and professionally with NC DPI, the State Auditor’s Office and the SBI.

As this work progresses, we will continue to reaffirm our focus – our students. Please know that classrooms are filled with learners who are curious, energized, and engaged with their peers as they are guided and supported by caring and committed educators.

We appreciate our state partners for carrying out their respective responsibilities with diligence and professionalism. Most importantly, the entire CMS team remains united in serving our students and families and ensuring every student has the opportunity to experience Endless Possibilities.
