City first needs to define ‘e-bike’ before developing regulations

E-bikes have grown in popularity as a greener alternative to commuting, but they’re also increasingly drawing the ire of Charlotteans. Defining what exactly constitutes an e-bike is a key question that has to be answered before the city can potentially impose new regulations.
At a Charlotte City Council safety committee meeting on Monday, Kimberly Owens, who represents District 6 (the SouthPark area) on council, said e-bikes are the topic she hears the most about from Charlotteans — both concern for riders and for pedestrians and surrounding traffic.
Dante Anderson, who chairs the safety committee and represents District 1, also at that meeting said she receives many emails about e-bikes in Charlotte.
