Hill’s return follows 2-month investigation into administrative and operational issues

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Crystal Hill will return to her job as superintendent following a paid leave, the school board chair announced late Tuesday.
In a prepared statement at the end of Tuesday’s school board meeting, chair Stephanie Sneed said after an outside review, Hill would resume her duties as superintendent just as classes are about to start for the new school year.
“We believe that returning her provides the best pathway forward for CMS while maintaining continuity and stability for our students, employees and families,” Sneed said.
She did not provide details of the review but said it identified “ongoing issues” that the board will address. Classes are scheduled to start in just two weeks, on Aug. 25.
The announcement comes after a nearly two-month investigation into “matters involving administrative and operational oversight.” Hill was placed on paid leave on June 17.
Hill first joined CMS in 2022 as chief of staff and has led the district as superintendent since 2023.

Sneed planned to take questions from reporters following the meeting.
In speaking with reporters following the meeting, Sneed declined to elaborate on the allegations against Hill and the investigation’s findings, according to WFAE. She said the district’s spending on the investigation was worth it to make sure “we had all the facts and to make sure that it was thorough.” [updated 8/11/26 from original version to add post-meeting comments]

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted today to return Dr. Crystal Hill to her role as Superintendent following her temporary leave. We believe this provides the best path forward while maintaining continuity and stability for our students, employees and families.
The Board did not take this action lightly. When serious concerns involving district operations and oversight are raised, the Board has an obligation to investigate them thoroughly, carefully consider the findings and act in the best long-term interest of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
The review identified issues that will require ongoing attention as it relates to leadership and operational practices. We will address these issues directly with Dr. Hill.
With the review complete, our focus remains on the start of the school year. CMS has strong leadership throughout the organization, and district leaders, principals, teachers and staff have worked throughout the summer to ensure our schools are ready to welcome students on August 25.
We appreciate the patience of our community, families and employees throughout this process. Our students remain at the heart of every decision we make, and we are committed to providing them with a strong and successful start to the new school year.
