Charlotte magazine, the glossy features and lifestyle magazine that has covered life in Charlotte for nearly 60 years, has started telling its contributors that it is shutting down in a few weeks.
The magazine, which is owned by Georgia-based Morris Communications, is said to be publishing its final edition, the December issue, which should hit subscribers’ mailboxes in the coming weeks.
The magazine has a monthly print edition and also an online presence. It employs a handful of people in Charlotte and also works with a strong bench of freelance contributors.
It describes itself as Charlotte’s “longest-standing and most-trusted lifestyle media brand.” It typically covers a wide array of topics, including dining, culture, history and city issues, in a mix of long-form and short-form features.
Its website said it has audited magazine circulation of 28,000, with readership of 200,000+ a month online.
Officials with Charlotte magazine and Morris Communications could not immediately be reached on Thursday. In addition to Charlotte magazine, Morris publishes city magazines in Athens, Ga.; Augusta, Ga.; Savannah, Ga.; and Orlando, as well as a series of outdoor and equine publications such as Quarter Horse News.
Although there have been new lifestyle magazines popping up in Charlotte in recent years, magazines face many of the same challenges as other media in attracting advertisers, who have many more options in the digital age.

I owe my career to Charlotte magazine. This sucks.
Why? I have been a subscriber forever to the Charlotte Magazine. I will miss it. It’s upsetting. Reading an in print magazine is important to me.
