New York-based The Clearing House Payments Co., which bills itself as the oldest banking association and private-sector payments company in the United States, is opening a new office in Charlotte that’ll come with 200 new jobs.

The project carries an estimated investment of $11.5M.

State incentives for the expansion, codenamed “Project Secure,” were voted on during a Tuesday morning meeting of the state’s Economic Investment Committee, part of the N.C. Department of Commerce. At that meeting, officials agreed to give the company a Jobs Development Investment Grant of a little more than $2.4M, on top of an expected $210,000 in incentives from the city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

The expansion was described by officials as a “strategic workplace and client engagement hub,” and will include “executive-level presence.” The jobs will be added here between 2028 and 2032. The company operates electronic payment networks used by banks to transfer money.

Semi-finalist cities for the project included Atlanta, Dallas and Tampa, Fla. — routine Sun Belt competitors to Charlotte for finance jobs — with the two finalists being Atlanta and Charlotte.

The Queen City was picked because of its quality of life, connectivity to New York and “relevant occupational workforce comparisons,” according to a JDIG presentation by the Economic Investment Committee officials on Tuesday.

The company has 36 job postings for Charlotte on its website, including engineers, vice president of business product management and several director roles.

It wasn’t immediately clear where The Clearing House Payments would put its Charlotte office. Elsewhere in North Carolina, the company has 216 jobs in Forsyth County.

The expected minimum average wage of the new jobs will be $162,322.
