We’re looking for an aspiring local journalist to work with us this summer
The Ledger seeks a part-time editorial intern for summer 2026

Apply today to join The Ledger as a reporting intern this summer
Deadline to apply: April 3, 2026
The Charlotte Ledger — one of Charlotte’s most dynamic local media companies — is seeking to hire a college student to work with us as a part-time reporting intern this summer.
What you’ll be doing: You will generate and pitch story ideas, report news and write features, create social media content, and take photos, all of which will appear in our newsletter, on our website and across our social media platforms. The position is remote, and while much of the job can be done by phone and computer, you should also expect to do some in-person reporting in Charlotte, so being based in the Charlotte region this summer is essential. The intern will be in frequent phone, email and Slack communication with The Ledger’s editors, who will provide coaching and editing.
Dates/hours: Start and end dates and weekly schedule are flexible and negotiable. We’re envisioning this as an eight- to 10-week commitment that’ll start in mid-May and conclude in August. This position requires a 20-hour commitment each week of the internship.
What we’re looking for: Clear, concise, lively and accurate writing; a can-do attitude; the ability to work independently; a hunger to dig up and report on important stories; and a love of local news. We’re a fast-paced news organization that values smart thinking, original and timely story ideas, and an openness to improvement and innovation. We are seeking applicants who are rising juniors or rising seniors. We believe journalism is stronger when it reflects the full diversity of the community it serves, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
Pay: $400/week stipend
How to apply: Please provide these things to The Ledger’s managing editor, Ashley Fahey, who can be reached at ashley@cltledger.com:
Three to five clips of your best work (can be published work or submitted class material)
A cover letter that explains why you are interested in writing for The Charlotte Ledger and why you care about local news
Your resume
Applicants who qualify will complete a writing assignment as part of the application process.
What is The Charlotte Ledger?: The Charlotte Ledger is a digital publication that provides original, business-y stories and local news to Charlotte through six newsletters and a website. We like to go after underreported stories and actual news (we’re not in the business of press release rewrites), and deliver it in an interesting way. We enjoy fun stories, too, but our model isn’t built on clicks, so you won’t be asked to comb social media in search of the next “viral” hit.
You’ll want to learn about our business model, our history and our approach to journalism before applying.
Feel free to email ashley@cltledger.com with any questions.
